The talk will review key concepts and causal models that dominate popular scholarly accounts of nationalist and post-nationalist politics and policies, including work by Saskia Sassen and Yasmin Soysal, before drawing on work by Immanuel Kant, Emile Durkheim, Claude Levi-Strauss, as well as deconstruction and queer theory, to explain the persistence of the nation and other intergenerational groups associated with systemic violence and inequality. The talk will explore alternative theories and case studies to suggest possibilities for concretizing citizenship without nations.
