While we now know that the police have become “militarized,” we know less about the history and logics of police militarization. This talk offers an historical sociology of militarized policing. It explores the deep historical roots of militarized policing and reveals how police militarization, from the very birth of policing itself, has been inextricably tethered to empire, colonial counter-insurgency, and the global color line.
