Garrett Ruley

Position
Doctoral Student in Sociology
Bio/Description

Garrett is a doctoral student in sociology at Princeton.  His research interests include equity and belonging in math and science education, science and technology policy, and the liberatory potential of the STEM disciplines.  He is particularly interested in exploring how political and economic power influence, benefit from, and/or are challenged by science and the narratives around it.

Prior to joining Princeton, Garrett initially worked as director of operations for a mission-driven restaurant group and as a database consultant for social-sector nonprofits.  He began teaching full-time in 2021, first teaching high school mathematics for two years, then joining the prison education program at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.  As a lead GED instructor he opened two new program branches at previously-unserved correctional facilities.

Garrett studied sociology, mathematics, and education at Swarthmore College and received his B.A. with honors in 2019.  Outside of teaching and research he enjoys coaching track & field and dancing Argentine Tango.
